The Labrador is strong and agile, powerful in his expressions and the tail never hangs still. The Labrador is very affectionate, has a fine nose, is very soft in the mouth, very instructive and wants to please its owner. He adores other dogs, people and children.

The Labrador Retriever is a true purebred dog. It is not enough for a dog to sit inside all day and take a pee every now and then. He needs a lot of exercise.

A Labrador is late adult, at about the age of two he is fully grown. The average age of a Labrador is 10 years, but there is a Labrador that lived to be 20 years old. There are labradors who still win prizes at the age of ten!

Appearance:

The general appearance of a Labrador is a dog that is strongly built, short in loin, very active, broad in skull, broad and deep in chest and ribs, broad and strong in loin and hindquarters. The Labrador is known in three different colors, the black (black), choco brown (chocolate) and blond (yellow). The Labrador is a stocky, fairly short breed with broad chests and sturdy legs. The Labrador’s brown eyes give him a friendly expression.

Care:

The care of the labrador consists of a weekly brushing. When the dog is moulting, it should be brushed every day to prevent the coat from matting. When there is a lot of walking in high grass or in the forest, always check the dog for ticks, because they are difficult to see in the dense undercoat. Of course, the soles of the feet are always checked for thorns and other sharp objects. Also think of the flea treatment both on the dog and in the house.

The Labrador is a good and enthusiastic swimmer. The coat is easy to keep clean: dry it with a towel when the dog comes home wet and brush and comb it briefly every day. The coat is water-repellent due to the thick undercoat that keeps him warm. The outer coat has such a structure that mud and dirt will fall off after a few hours. A labrador needs a lot of exercise and likes a lot of attention.

Characteristics:

The typical breed characteristics for a Labrador are a good temperament and very agile. In addition, a Labrador has an exceptionally good nose, is soft in the mouth and an outspoken lover of water. The Labrador is a devoted, easily adapting companion.

The Labrador is intelligent, lively and docile, with a strong will to please his master. In addition, the Labrador is friendly by nature without a trace of aggression or inappropriate shyness.

The Labrador can develop HD (hip dysplasia), ED (elbow dysplasia), eye problems and HMLR (myopathy). The chance that these disorders occur in a dog from tested parents is much smaller than from untested parents.

The Labrador is a dog with an enormous “will to please”. This means that he will do everything in his power to please his owners. It is precisely this aspect that should be used in his education: positive behavior should be reinforced by rewarding the dog (pat or biscuit), while negative behavior should be weakened by ignoring the dog.
